There’s something special about working with a live edge slab — every curve, every knot, every ripple in the grain tells a story long before it reaches our shop. For this recent project at Custom Country Woods, we had the privilege of turning a set of beautiful, highly figured maple live edge slabs into a custom bar top that feels as alive as the tree it came from.
From the moment these slabs hit the workbench, we knew they were going to be something extraordinary. The grain had that rare combination of movement and depth that only figured maple can deliver. Our customer immediately saw the potential and chose details that elevated the piece even further.
Filling the Voids With Character
To highlight the natural voids and pockets in the slab, the customer selected Eye Candy’s “Kendo Brown” pigment — a rich, earthy tone that blends seamlessly with maple’s warm hues. Once mixed into the epoxy, the pigment settled into the slab’s natural contours like it had always belonged there. It added contrast without overpowering the wood’s personality, giving the bar top a grounded, organic feel.
Finishing That Brings the Wood to Life
For the final finish, we used Osmo Clear Satin 3043, a choice that never disappoints on figured hardwoods. The moment the oil touched the surface, the maple lit up — grain lines deepened, chatoyance shimmered, and the entire slab took on a warm, inviting glow. Osmo’s natural, durable finish lets the wood speak for itself, and on this project, it spoke loudly.
A Collaboration Worth Highlighting
This bar top was a team effort from start to finish. Kyle and Danny worked together throughout the build, combining their craftsmanship, eye for detail, and shared passion for bringing out the best in every slab that comes through our doors. Their collaboration shows in every inch of the final piece.
