Hard maple is not like most hardwood, the sapwood is more commonly used than its heartwood. The sapwood is nearly white to an off-white cream color, and may appear with a reddish or golden hue. The heartwood is a darker reddish brown. Hard maple is fairly easy to work with. It has a tendency to burn when being machined with high-speed cutters such as a router. Hard maples common uses are flooring, veneer, musical instuments, cutting boards, butcher blocks, workbenches, baseball bats, and other turned objects.
