The heartwood is light to medium reddish brown. Paler sapwood is usually well defined. The grain is interlocked (making it very resistant to splitting) with a somewhat coarse, uneven texture. Common uses of grey elm are boxes, baskets, furniture, hockey sticks, and veneer.
