The heartwood is typically medium reddish brown with irregularly spaced streaks of dark brown to black. The color will tend to darken with age. Despite its high density, goncalo alves is not too difficult to work. It can be difficult to glue due to its resistance to moisture absorption. It turns and finishes well. Common uses are flooring, furniture, cabinetry, carving and turned objects.
