Butternut is beautiful and enjoyable to work with. The heartwood is chestnut brown. The sapwood is white to light brown. Growth rings are darker and form distinct grain patterns. The grain is typically straight, with a medium to course texture. Butternut is easily worked with both hand and machine tools. It glues, stains and finishes well. Common uses of butternut are veneer, carving, furniture and interior trim.
